I am dying to see book #3, "The Fire". Cannot locate.
My daughter received the first of the series when she was a little girl. We bought the second of the series when she was twelve. I have been searching for the past two years for the third of the series, entitled, "The Fire". HELP!

The Pirates of Bat Cave Island: A Treasure-Hunting Flap Book
Published in Hardcover by Little Simon (May, 1997)
Authors: Burton Albert and Margeaux Lucas
Average review score:

Kids love pirates and flap books! This book has it all!
This is a really fun, silly adventure story with kid-pirates (with names like Sackbottom and Tattoo Tessie) at the helm. There are flaps on every page, and even a fold-out game board and game spinner tucked in a back-pocket. (The game is similar to CandyLand.) I gave this book to my nephew (age 5); he made me play this game with him for HOURS!

Pitcairn's Island, and the Islanders in 1850, 3rd Edition [ABC-4601]
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (June, 1940)
Author: Walter Brodie
Average review score:

A small but fascinating chunk of Pitcairn history
This book was absolutely great! It was written in 1850, and is about things that happened on Pitcairn around the time of the 30's and 40's. Includes copies of letters to the Admiralty from captains who had stopped on the Island. Has the information contained in the Pitcairn's Island Register from 1790 to 1850. Also has a section on the laws of the Island. This book was rather high, but I feel it was well worth the price, to get the piece of history it contains. The author was "marooned" on the island for about 3 weeks when his shipmates left him and a couple others, rather than spend an extra hour to pick them up. (They were going to California--did they REALLY think the extra hour would have killed them???) The author's journal for that time is in the book, as well as the other things that happened to him when he left (that was pretty interesting, also). The author seems a very sincere and kind man, and dearly loved the Pitcairn people.

Pleasures of the Canary Islands "Wine Food Beauty and Mystery"
Published in Hardcover by Wine Appreciation Guild (January, 1992)
Authors: Ann Walker and Larry Walker
Average review score:

A Small, Intimate Guide, by fermed
This is the type of travel book that used to be written by Victorian gentlemen about the exotic places they found as soon as they stepped outside England. It feels more like a long letter from a dear friend than a short guide book; and even though it is 10 years old (published in 1992)it is a wonderful companion to have if you are to visit these islands. It complements well the second edition of "Canary Islands" published by Lonely Planet, which I have also reviewed.

Its point of view is that the traveler should gain and explore the natural pleasures of the islands, in food, in wine, in scenery, in its inhabitants, and in the sheer joy of being there. Ann and Larry Walker run a restaurant in California (or did when they wrote this book) and they cannot shake the laid-back bonhomie that marks people with such a background. Of course, importing laid-back anything to the Canaries is like taking the proverbial coals to Newcastle, for this is the land of the slow, of the meditative, of the "aplatanado," a wonderful word that can be translated as "bananified," but which means to convey the state of being exquisitely beyond the reach of pressures of any kind.

The Canaries consists of 7 inhabited islands, close to the coast of North Africa, and the book takes them one by one, in the order in which they were conquered by Spain. Because each island is so distinctly different from the others, each must be addresses separately. The Walkers write delightful essays about each, telling you where to stay, where to eat and what to do. They hold your hand, as it were, and urge you to look at the night sky in La Palma, or to dip the local fish into the mojo sauces that arrived at your table on the island of Hierro. These are wonderful companions with which to course over all the seven islands.

The book, little as it is, has some spectacular pictures taken by the authors, a section containing local recipes, and fine discussions about the island wines. Can't ask for much more in so small a package.

Ples Blong Iumi: Solomon Islands, the past four thousand years
Published in Paperback by Institute of Pacific Studies (01 December, 1989)
Authors: Sam Alasia and Hugh Laracy
Average review score:

Ples Blong Imui, Solomon Islands Past Four Thousand Years
Excellent Book ! Extremely well written, historical accounts documented by locals of Solmon Islands. Thin, little book but one hungrly eats up every word. Factual views from highly educated (academically and non-traditionally) intelligent people who present the realistic and truthful side of a Pacific Island Peoples history. Non-biased by Missionary or "White Man's" views, it is an account of facts rarely found or publlished. One finds so few works of Anthropological status writen and compiled by the local people of Pacific Island Nations. Very Interesting, creatively written, not for the average person but those who are truly interested in factual accounts of the Solomon's, Anthropology students, and travelers who want to "know" more about the people who they are visiting and not just where to eat and stay. FOr true lovers of Melanesia and Pacific Island history. It's rare to find such a jewel amongst the many grains of sand written today. Buy it ! You won't be sorry!
